Presenter: Terry Eagan, MD
Compassion Fatigue is a condition characterized by the gradual lessening of compassion over time that is increasingly experienced by individuals that work directly with those suffering from trauma. Therapists, nurses, physicians, clergy, police officers, service workers, educators, and family members caring for chronically ill loved ones are just some of those negatively impacted by Compassion Fatigue. Essentially, ANYONE who helps others is vulnerable. Symptoms can include hopelessness, constant stress and anxiety, pervasive negative attitude, irritability among others, and can affect not only individuals, but organizations and institutions as well.
In this workshop, we will examine some of the common presentations of Compassion Fatigue and who is vulnerable to its destruction. We will explore how one’s early life experiences and past personal traumatic experiences may create vulnerability to the development of Compassion Fatigue, as well as what can be done to ameliorate this phenomenon in individuals and organizations.
