Trauma Recovery: What It Really Means to Heal

A male therapist speaks with a female client

If you wanted to get from one side of a pedestrian bridge to the other, then could you just think about it and be on the other side? Or would you need to walk across that bridge? Trauma recovery is a lot like that.

Traumas don’t instantly heal.  And when they feel like they do, it can be a sign that you’re burying the trauma instead of addressing it. But the truth is unresolved trauma can still control you and impact your mental and physical wellbeing.

Trauma recovery is about identifying the traumas that you’ve not healed from and then working through them to find the wholeness and wellness you need and want. It can be a long and difficult process. It can be challenging. But if left untreated, trauma only worsens. It can begin to affect all areas of your life, preventing you from having healthy relationships, hinder your work or education, and increase your risk of substance use disorder and addiction. Fortunately, Integrative Life Center understands the deep challenge individuals face in identifying, confronting, and overcoming trauma. Thus, we offer a wide range of therapeutic services as well as treatment programs.

The Role of Trauma-Informed Therapy in Recovery

When you experience trauma, you develop a belief system around it, such as:

  • Lack of physical and emotional safety
  • No control over your life
  • Opening up emotionally shows weakness
  • People from X demographic are unsafe to be around
  • Letting your guard down is dangerous
  • Stigmas

You develop beliefs like these to keep yourself safe. But often, the mind applies beliefs too broadly. This can hinder recovery and promote everyday psychological distress. For example, if opening up emotionally shows weakness, then you’ll struggle to share how you feel–a critical step in recovery.

So it’s vital to identify these beliefs.

Trauma-informed care first respects the fact that you’ve been through trauma. So these beliefs feel deep-rooted, necessary, and 100% true.

It also recognizes that trauma is at the heart of many psychological challenges like:

  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Personality disorders
  • Post-traumatic stress disorder

But as you begin to talk through the trauma and these beliefs, trauma loses its power over you. You begin to question these beliefs.

Then trauma recovery can begin.

Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy’s Role in Recovery

Cognitive-behavioral therapy or CBT is an evidence-based form of therapy that’s essential to trauma recovery. In CBT, you’ll talk through the beliefs and habits you’ve created around trauma. As you do, you begin to find personalized solutions.

You discover you can replace certain beliefs and patterns with healthier, more life-fulfilling ones.

Integrative Healing’s Role in Recovering from Trauma

When you experience trauma, you lose a piece of yourself. You may no longer feel connected to your emotions because they’re too painful. And it’s hard to connect with people if you can’t relate to yourself.

You may neglect proper nutrition and mental health. You may also develop an addiction that temporarily eases the pain, but makes it worse in the long-run.

Integrative healing helps you rediscover yourself and feel whole again by reuniting your body, mind, and spirit.

Integrative therapies include non-traditional treatments, such as:
