There are numerous factors leading individuals toward substance abuse. Often, a contributing factor or underlying cause of someone’s abuse of drugs or alcohol is a deep-seated trauma. Thus, when individuals look to get support to recover from their addiction, they need trauma-informed treatment for addiction to heal properly. Fortunately, Integrative Life Center understands how trauma can lead to, complicate, and influence substance abuse. Our experts use a wide array of therapies and treatment programs to not only uncover and address an individual’s issues but work to develop an effective plan to address them. We dedicate ourselves to helping you or your loved one heal physically, mentally, and spiritually.
What is Trauma-Informed Treatment for Addiction?
Because the body experiences significant stress and changes during a traumatic event, innovative treatment for post-traumatic stress incorporate body-centered, or somatic practices, trauma-informed treatment for addiction is an approach that engages those with a history of trauma by acknowledging traumatic incidents, recognizing its symptoms, and understanding the role trauma has played in their lives. Whether the trauma an individual is struggling with is from their past or recent, our counselors and therapists can use a variety of treatments. Our goal is to recognize the extent of the trauma, identify triggers, and then together develop a plan to cope. For instance, some of the therapeutic services we offer include:
These are just some of the therapies we use to address trauma in individuals struggling not just with substance use disorder but other mental health issues. Trauma-informed treatment is a therapy we offer to help the healing process for any individual who has experienced a trauma.
What We Offer
Traumatic experiences, even if seemingly unrelated to present problems, do have an impact on mental health. Thus, if never addressed or treated and allowed to fester, trauma will continue to hinder and stunt emotional, social, and physical health. Some trauma sprouts from an event participated in or witnessed. Often this is the case with PTSD or post-traumatic stress disorder. Other times, trauma can be rooted in experience from childhood, young adulthood, or some recent abuse such as intimate partner abuse, domestic abuse, or child abuse. It is not uncommon for individuals to turn to drugs or alcohol to self-medicate. In the short term, drugs or alcohol abuse alleviates the distress or pain an individual is experiencing. However, this is just a superficial fix. Over the long-term, substance abuse only worsens the mental health of individuals and greatly increases their risk of developing a dependency or addiction.
