Spirituality / Medicine Wheel / Labyrinth

Spirituality

Coming to terms with one's spirituality is an important aspect of becoming a fully integrated and whole person. Spirituality is a connection to that which is both part of self and bigger than self. Spirituality is that mysterious quality that we recognize when it is touched inside us but often find difficult to describe--poets and artists give us insight into it. Spirituality isn't religion. It can be experienced in churches or places of worship but is just as likely to be found in the natural world-sitting on a riverbank, at the beach, walking in the woods, or spending time in a garden. More than just a psychological and physical condition, addiction is a spiritual dis-ease. Integrative Life Center offers a variety of opportunities for clients to connect to what is sacred and meaningful to them and from which they draw strength.

Labyrinth

The Labyrinth is an archetypal form consisting of a series of circular pathways leading to a center space. It assists the spiritual seekers in finding their own center. This ancient and universal meditation has been used since prehistoric times. Labyrinths have gained popularity once again in today's world and are used by modern mystics to help achieve a contemplative state. They have become an effective therapeutic tool as well. Walking the Labyrinth facilitates insight and support as clients make significant changes in perception and behavior.

Walking among the twists and turns, the mind quiets and one loses track of the outside world. As we become "lost" in the labyrinth's non-linear pathways our logical mind gives way to deeper states of consciousness and we become "lost" in our own inner world. We literally see things from a different place and this new perspective translates to new choices. The labyrinth is designed to balance and integrate left and right hemispheres of the brain. As one stands in the center and sometimes in the hours and days after walking the labyrinth, internal shifts continue to bring fresh insight.

Maze

Mazes have been built by many civilizations all over the world. Unlike the labyrinth, which leads us to our center, the maze is a complex structure of interconnecting pathways that seem to lead nowhere. It is often experienced as a puzzle to be solved, as the participant must work his or her way from the entrance of the maze to an exit, or another location-a journey that can be confusing and difficult. Going through the maze can be both a spiritual metaphor and an exciting challenge.

Through this exercise clients confront their core anger, frustration, fear, and resistance to asking for help. The maze offers an opportunity to experience the limits of control patterns such as "I can do this myself" or "I can figure this out myself" as participants experience the power of asking for and receiving needed support. Insight is gained into personal history of not having help and how that has created a "closed" belief system. Those participating in the maze are provided with an opportunity and invitation to "do it' differently. Like the labyrinth, the maze continues to work on the psyche long after the actual experience ends as further insight keeps coming.
