Equine Assisted Therapy

Horses are intuitive. In a therapeutic setting they become an honest and forthright reflection of what's happening deep inside those participating in the process. As one person remarked, "It's hard to argue with a 1500 pound horse. You tend to believe what you're experiencing." Horses can sense our emotions and the patterns we've adopted to help us with difficulty-patterns that over time have become part of the problem. They help us connect with buried feelings from the past that need to be healed-and they provide healing.

Horse assisted therapy helps with:

  • Issues of insecurity and low self esteem
  • Owning our natural need for acceptance and love
  • Difficulty in asserting and also being overly assertive
  • Fear of making a mistake
  • Loss and grief
  • Patterns of over control and also refusal to take responsibility
  • Being too cautious and also failing to keep ourselves safe

These as well as other conditions can take a long time to discover in a traditional therapeutic setting, but quickly become obvious when working with a skilled counselor in horse-assisted therapy. Horses are a formidable metaphor.
