Adventure ropes course

Adventure Therapies

Adventure holds mystery--moments of uncertainty and risk. It provides dynamic and dramatic settings that take us out of our ordinary world. It awakens our imagination and interrupts mental control patterns; it causes us to challenge old beliefs we've held about ourselves and about life. It has the power to make us new.

Adventure therapies are an important feature of Integrative Life Center's program. We offer clients opportunities for various levels of risk from mild to fairly scary and to pretty darn scary. Participants are encouraged to push their envelope, recognizing we all have different envelopes and different edges. Exploring new emotional territory is encouraged, but never forced. Recognizing our limits and respecting them can be as important to the healing process as pushing through them.

Challenge or obstacle courses have been used for thousands of years to train soldiers. Today they are used in the business world to build team spirit and in therapeutic settings to assist participants in challenging themselves, building trust and self-esteem, assisting in healing the past and development as a whole person. The Integrative Life Center offers several adventures to spark and nurture the spirit of recovery.

Ropes Courses

Ropes courses offer challenging activities consisting of high and/or low elements. High ropes can be 25 to 50 feet high and use of a variety of materials including trees, utility poles and steel structures. High ropes courses and climbing programs generally focus on personal achievements and ask participants to confront their personal fears and anxieties in a challenging but safe environment. Low ropes take place on the ground or only a few feet above the ground. Low rope elements present tests of physical strength, stamina, agility, cooperation, balance, and flexibility, and invite participants to confront such emotional issues such as difficulty trusting, fear of falling, fear of failure, and fear of losing control.

Ropes courses can be static or dynamic. Participants in a static course are attached to an upper wire, a belay cable, with ropes and carabineers for safety. On a dynamic course, participants are connected to a rope, which an adventure counselor on the ground will be holding and belaying the participant through the exercises. In both high and low, static and dynamic ropes courses risk is managed by highly trained professionals along with team members who assume critical spotting roles and offer encouragement. A variety of activities provide opportunities to demonstrate trust in other members of the group as well as developing self-reliance and cooperation.

The outcome of ropes courses includes enhancement of:

  • Positive risk taking
  • Trust
  • Self esteem
  • Cooperation
  • Decision making
  • Self confidence
  • Leadership
  • Goal setting
  • Teamwork
